The work begins with three musical ideas: a contemplative melodic theme illuminated by delicate notes which evoke the glimmering evening light, an harmonic theme resembling the overtones of a resonating gong, and a dance-like rhythmic theme which becomes disjointed and more and more pervasive.
After a dizzying fall from the treble to the bass, these elements interact, either in opposition, or combine in a tumultuous climax. The first theme makes a gradual return in the form of a wrenching recitative - a mirror of the beginning of the piece.
